It's that time of year AGAIN

God, can this time of year just bugger off? I find it completely nauseating. Everywhere you look, it’s “new year, new goals, new you”, and honestly — blah blah blah.
According to the social media bible, I’m meant to wake up on January 1st as a calmer, fitter, richer, more spiritually aligned version of myself. Meanwhile, my inner crazy bitch is screaming: NOT HAPPENING.
Because if you actually think about it, it’s just another week in another month in another year. Yes, the number changed from 2025 to 2026, but why does that mean we all have to reinvent ourselves like we’re an iPhone update?
Here’s a wild thought: what if we’re already the best versions of ourselves? Or at least… good enough for now.
Over the past week, I’ve seen roughly 2.4 million posts about change. Weight loss. Money habits. New year resets. Exercising more. Eating better. Career glow-ups. Self-care routines that require a colour-coded planner costing £150 quid. It all sounds lovely in theory — but it’s also a lot. And what usually happens? We fail by mid-January and feel rubbish about ourselves. Again. Tradition!
So this year, I’m keeping things steady. Yes, I’ll probably need to invisibly wire my jaw after the frankly heroic levels of cheese, crackers and wine I’ve consumed over the last month — but that’s where the ambition ends.
No, I won’t be doing a three-minute breathing reset at dawn. I won’t be “practising forgiveness.” I will not join an online study group, learn a second language, review my financial goals, learn the violin, turn vegan, or commit to a 40-minutes-a-day, five-times-a-week exercise regime. Growth doesn’t have to be loud or fast. It can be slow. Quiet. Steady. Gentle. We don’t need to reinvent ourselves to make progress — we just need to keep showing up and doing what feels right, at our own pace.
My goal for this month — honestly, for the year — is simple: be kinder to myself and stop piling on the pressure. I’m doing OK. I’m 55 and still alive. My family is healthy. I have a little job I genuinely love. And I’m lucky enough to have friends and family who love me too.
Turns out, my life is already pretty bloody good. And to anyone heading back to work today — have a good one, and don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re doing OK ♥️
Sending you love,
Moo x
