Lets Whisper About Midlife Reflections

I want to tell you something quietly.

Come closer.

You were never the problem.

Not in that classroom. Not in that relationship. Not in that room full of people who looked at you and saw someone who wasn't quite measuring up. Not when they moved you without asking. Not when they chose a version of success that had no space for who you actually were.

You were never too much.

You were never not enough.

You were just in the wrong room.

And the tragedy — the thing that keeps me up sometimes even now — is that you believed them. Because you were young and they were supposed to know. And nobody told you that the people handing out verdicts on your potential were working from a very small, very limited, very particular idea of what a human being was supposed to look like when she was succeeding.

They were measuring the wrong things.

They were always measuring the wrong things.

And you —

you were busy being creative and chaotic and feeling everything at full volume and thinking sideways and making connections nobody else could see.

That's not failure.

That's a gift they didn't have the vocabulary for.

So here's the whisper. The one I needed someone to say to me and nobody did.

You were brilliant all along.

Not despite the chaos. Not when you finally sorted yourself out. Not once you proved them wrong.

Right then. In that room. Exactly as you were.

Brilliant.

Women who refuse to suffer politely live here.
